Wildfire Folk: A Fusion of Musical Energy

Wade Street Church Hall, Frog Lane, Lichfield, Staffordshire. WS13 6HL

For just over ten years, a remarkable group called Wildfire Folk has been sparking the enthusiasm of talented local youngsters – helping them hone their musical abilities, develop life skills and make friendships that last for life.

Based in the centre of Lichfield, where they regularly rehearse at Wade Street Church Hall, Wildfire attracts young, talented musicians from across Walsall, Aldridge, Sutton and further afield.

Wildfire was formed by Lichfield Arts as a Youth Ensemble to play music as it should be played – with enthusiasm, energy and style. Originally, created as part of the Lichfield Arts Folk Arts project, Wildfire started off as a one-off workshop but was so popular that it quickly developed into a band in its own right, with regular rehearsals and performances all over the country.

Now, with COVID restrictions easing, they are looking for new recruits to join their award-winning band.

Wildfire members benefit from formal tuition from a very experienced and well-qualified musical director, as well as the opportunity to learn new instruments.

The band has a demanding and varied repertoire and perform across the country at events such as Chester Folk Festival, Upton Folk Festival, the Acoustic Festival of Great Britain.

In 2019 the band celebrated its 10th anniversary with a celebration at The Guildhall in Lichfield, joined by former members and supporters. The event coincided with the launch of the band’s 4th EP, aptly named DECADEnce.

Members are aged from 10 up to their mid-twenties, with new recruits expected to play an instrument up to Grade 2.

Many of Wildfire’s former members have gone on to musical careers, making a name for themselves as professional musicians in, while many others go onto study music at university.

Wildfire is non-profit making, with parents charged a nominal fee to help with the expenses, but the majority of funding comes from sponsors through bodies like Lichfield District council.

Wildfire Folk rehearse on Thursdays, 6.00pm – 8.00pm during term time at Wade Street Church Hall, Frog Lane, Lichfield, Staffordshire. WS13 6HL. Membership costs £45 per term. For details call Stuart Davies, trustee, on 07792412083.
