“We were able to provide socially-distanced meals and seating for a couple of months in between lockdowns, but we had to revert back to collection-only shortly after. After the spike in cases in January, we made the decision to close again for seven weeks and we’ve only just re-opened for collection at the beginning of March.”

Local Pubs With Beer Gardens

Looking forward to the pubs re-opening? With Covid restrictions easing from April 12, and many local pubs with beer gardens in the West Midlands planning to serve their customers outdoors, find out which local venues are opening.

beer taps

We’ve been paying close to attention to which pubs are opening in Walsall and the surrounding areas from April 12 for outdoor drinking and dining, but if you know of any that are missing from the list, get in touch.

Check out our local pubs with beer gardens guide to see where you can sip your drinks in the sunshine (we hope!)

Local Pubs With Beer Gardens  – Q&A

Before we begin, let’s take a look at some of the most common questions that pub goers are asking right now.

  • Do I have to order food at the pub?

The government has lifted the restriction that was previously in place that required customers to purchase a “substantial meal” before ordering alcohol. So, you can just order drinks.

  • Do I have to book a table?

Many local pubs are asking for customers to book in advance. We’d recommend that you ring any pub before just turning up to make sure you get a space, and to make sure it is definitely open.

  • Will I be able to go inside to the toilet?

Every pub needs to provide toilet facilities. This means you are allowed to go inside for this reason.  The same recommendations are in place, so customers should keep a safe distance apart while queuing and it’s likely you’ll be requested to wear a mask, unless exempt.

  • What times will the pub shut?

With the easing of restrictions, there are no curfews set, so pubs can open for their usual hours.

  • Will there be track and trace?

All pubs that are opening will be legally required to request contact details of customers. This will be through scanning a QR code with the NHS app, or by providing details on paper.

  • Can I go to the pub with friends?

The Rule of 6 applies. This means you can visit the pub with a group of up to six people from a maximum of two different households.

Apartments Planned For Iconic Walsall Building

Globe House in Bradford Place may be converted into studio apartments if a proposal to Walsall Council by its owners goes ahead.

globe house walsall

The Grade II listed, three-storey building was formerly the Institute of Science & Art and was built in 1888 before it was bought by Globe Properties Ltd in 2004.

In more recent years, it’s been used as a serviced office space by Walsall Council and private companies.

30 Studio Apartments Planned For Globe House

With occupancy levels reported to be as low as 30 per cent, Globe Properties Ltd are now looking to transform the property into more than 30 studio apartments.

Agents J Mason Associates said: “Globe Property Ltd purchased the building in 2004 and sought to bring it back into use as a business centre and work carried out with Walsall Regeneration suggested a potential demand for office accommodation in the town centre.

“The Business Centre originally operated with reasonable success, achieving occupancy rates of circa 70 per cent, but with the financial downturn in 2008 the centre began to struggle and in the period since then the building has only achieved occupancy rates of around 30-40 per cent and a significant portion of that has been Globe Property itself.

“The building has been marketed for use as a whole building or by individual floors and individual rooms, but none of these options has produced a viable way of taking the building forward in its current use.

“Globe Property are looking to downsize their own occupancy and consequently a new use for the building is required.

“Research shows a surplus of office accommodation available in Walsall Town Centre and the space currently available in Globe House remains on the market but with no interest.

“Alternative uses have therefore been considered for the property including retail use, but this was not considered a practical solution for this building and again there is a surplus of retail accommodation vacant within the town including in the Victorian Arcade.

“Other uses considered include a Nursery, Night Club, Hospice and GP Surgery but all have proved unviable.

“The proposal is therefore for the conversion of the building into 35 studios and apartments for residential use.

“Residential use provides the building with a viable use moving forward.

“The town centre can accommodate residential use and this is the only route that has been identified that is capable of generating the significant funds needed to protect the heritage asset.”

1947 Pheasey Magazine Resurfaces

A magazine sent to the tenants of the Pheasey Estate in 1947 has resurfaced after many years, offering a fascinating insight into what was happening in the community shortly after the end of the Second World War.

pheasey magazine

An original copy of the magazine was scanned and sent to us by a man from Wales called John Newton, whose father grew up in the Great Barr area. John moved from Pheasey to Wales in 1949 and his father kept the magazine as a memento as it was his design on the front cover. When his father passed away, he discovered a copy of the old community magazine and scanned it for preservation.

“On the death of my father, I found this magazine among his paperwork,” said John. “As a small child I can remember him working on the kitchen table to produce this cover. It’s obvious this magazine was special to my father for him to keep it.”

Pheasey Magazine Started in 1944

Believed to have first launched in 1944, the 1947 editions of the Pheasey Magazine were issued for free to the 1,800 tenants of Pheasey on a quarterly basis.

The Chairman during this era was Mr. J. T. Wright, owner of the Beacon Dairy Farm, who was said to have “a heart-interest in the welfare of the people”.

The Pheasey magazine was a mouth-piece for the community, focusing on events, gossip and humor. As well as featuring a section specifically for youngsters on the estate, it also included insightful editorial, educational articles and advertisements from some of the local businesses.

Page 1 of the 1947 July edition, for example, reveals some of the activities that took place at the Community Centre at the Old Barn on Hillingford Avenue. They included cinema clubs, dances and even a poultry club!

In this edition, we also learn of Carnival Day, which featured such delights as the Crowning of the Queen, a band procession, donkey rides and the Poultry Club show.

It’s a fascinating snap-shot of history from the Pheasey Estate, which can read it in full here.

Reproduced as part of local heritage interest.

Do you have any other copies of the Pheasey magazine tucked away? If so, get in touch and let us know.

Travellers’ Site Planned For Unused Pleck Plot

Walsall Council has submitted planning for a new transit site for the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller community.

pleck road walsall

The planning application, which is being considered for approval, confirms that the new site would be situated on an unused area of land at the junction of Pleck Road and Darlaston Road.

The land is owned by Walsall Council and initial plans need to be validated by officers before statutory planning consultation begins. Residents of the area will be contacted in due course.

Cllr Adrian Andrew, Deputy Leader of Walsall Council said:

“Access to quality homes – in whatever form they take, is a key element of any thriving and sustainable community.  The proposed site would therefore benefit those already settled, as well as support those from the wider Traveller communities alike.”

“It is a good opportunity to improve the services we offer to the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities and to also deal with any issues associated with unauthorised encampments more effectively. If the development of a temporary transit site goes ahead, it presents the opportunity to create better outcomes for all communities in the borough of Walsall.”

“There has been considerable local interest in the proposal and in response, we will be going above and beyond to ensure that local residents and the wider community have the opportunity to fully understand the detail and contribute to the planning consultation.”

West Midlands Knitters Bag Police Praise

Avid stitchers from Perry Barr and across the city have bagged thousands of thank-yous from police officers for providing a useful piece of kit.

Volunteers from Blue Line Stitchers, set up by Jo Spear, from West Midlands Police’s custody suite in Perry Barr, along with the Birmingham-based group for the Love of Scrubs, known as ‘sewing angels’, having been sewing, pressing, packaging up and delivering kit bags for officers to take their uniforms home with them and help prevent any cross-contamination.

West Midlands Knitters Hand Over 5,000 Kit Bags

The civic-minded volunteers have handed around 5,000 kit bags to frontline police officers and forensics’ officers and traffic units.

They have also stitched around 16,000 washbags, face masks and scrubs for hospitals, GP surgeries, care homes and other frontline organisations across the West Midlands region.

Detention escort officer Jo Spears said: “The time and effort that everyone has put in is just amazing.

“From the people who have donated the fabric, to the sewers stitching the bags, everyone who’s got involved really does epitomise what community spirit is all about.”

Chanel Morrison-Jolley is the co-ordinator for the Birmingham group, which has about 1,000 volunteers – ranging from their oldest sewer who is 97, to children of five and six who are helping parents fold and pack the finished items.

Chanel said: “It’s been an honour to help. So many people found they had time on their hands, especially during these lockdowns, and they just wanted to do something that would make a difference.

“Not only have we been supporting the police and all the other key workers, but it’s been great for so many of the volunteers to be able to do something positive from the safety of their own homes.”

“Now we’d like to say a massive thank you to each and every one of you who’s been a part of this, for all your hard work and dedication- we really appreciate your care and kindness.”
