Raise A Glass: 50 Years of CAMRA

FIFTY years ago, a quiet revolution began that has changed the way British people enjoy their drink – and Walsall was at the heart of it.

The nationwide Campaign for Real Ale – or CAMRA – was launched in 1971 to fight the spread of gassy keg beers and lagers and to support proper cask conditioned beer, better known as real ale.

Half a century later, drinking habits have changed massively, with a booming real ale market driven by popular brands and thousands of micro-breweries.

And one of the very first branches of CAMRA was formed right here in Walsall in the late summer of 1972, based at The Pretty Bricks pub in John Street.

Driven by founder Peter Linley, who was Vice Principal of the then Walsall Technical College, the Pretty Bricks was the spiritual base for the North Midlands Branch, which actually covered the country as far north as John O’Groats.

CAMRA almost 50 years old

Now the Walsall branch is preparing to celebrate it own 50th anniversary next year.

Chairman Mikee Evans said: “We have come a long way in 50 years. Back then, the country had been taken over by these keg beers, and the national brewers that dominated the beer industry, so CAMRA was launched to challenge that.

“Now when you walk into a pub like the Black Country Arms there are 20 different ales and 20 different brewers – and you have to think CAMRA have played a big part in that.

“It’s not just pubs, it’s in the shops too – the change in the last 30 years has been massive, it’s a different world.”

So, what is it about real ale that converts so many drinkers?

Mikee said: “It’s the variety really. With lager, you only have different strengths, but with ales you have different styles, different flavours.  There are so many varieties that you can come up with.  It can be pale, it can be red, there are so many different options.  Using different hops and malts can completely change the taste, while lager is just lager, really.”

Just as the real ale scene has become trendy CAMRA, once perceived as a club for older drinkers, has changed too.

“There are a lot of young people that drink real ales now,” Mikee said, “All kinds of people are trying it – it’s not the ‘old man beer’ that it used to be perceived as.”

Walsall CAMRA membership

Membership of CAMRA has benefits too – you get ‘50p off a pint’ vouchers for Wetherspoons, as well as discounts to CAMRA beer festivals and magazines. Then, of course, there’s the simple joy of going to branch meetings, and meeting new friends over a pint.

Mikee said: “Obviously, the pandemic had quite an effect on our meetings, but when branch meetings are on, we go to a different pub every month to give them our support, encouraging people to visit them and try their beers.”

But he explained that while pubs had been hit hard by lockdowns, COVID 19 hadn’t stopped beer lovers from enjoying a tipple.

“Actually, during the pandemic people have been drinking more at home, and in that respect, Real Ale has benefited from getting delivered – breweries and producers have really gone the extra mile to get their beers to customers.”

Which local brewers would Mikee recommend Pioneer readers try?

“There’s a great Walsall brewery called AJ’s Ales which is doing brewery deliveries,” Mikee said, “and there’s New Invention in Bloxwich and the Backyard Brewhouse in Brownhills, which is really good too.”

Now, as the country starts to leave lockdown and hopefully put the pandemic in the past, Walsall’s CAMRA members are starting to think about how they will raise a glass to celebrate their 50th birthday next year – and the role they played in changing how British people drink.

Mikee said: “We’re really looking forward to it and are currently discussing anniversary celebrations in meetings. First and foremost, we’re getting the wheels turning to get the regular Walsall Beer Festival back on, as well as various other events.”

And it goes without saying that, 50 years after it saw the launch of the Walsall branch, members will be once again paying a visit to the Pretty Bricks.

Petition To Stop Illegal Street Racing In West Bromwich

Nicola Richards MP is campaigning to stop illegal street racing in West Bromwich – through working with the police and an online petition.

illegal street racing westbromwich

The Conservative MP, who represents the West Bromwich East constituency, is urging local people to sign her petition calling for greater measure to be introduced to tackle the menace and in turn improve public safety on roads.

Nichola Richards MP is campaigning to get something done about the illegal street racing as a High Court injunction against this activity has lapsed and, as we went to press, this had not been renewed.

The politician has been working with West Bromwich police to assist all efforts by officers to tackle the problem.

She said: “I have been engaging with police to make sure they are doing what they can to combat this and they have been very forthcoming with information and assistance.

“They have operations in place every weekend, however, the car cruisers are smart and highly organised too.

“They have a complex system of spotters and escape routes, drones, removal trucks, and even legal advisors. The situation is serious and it requires a serious response.

“It is clear the police need support. That support should be provided by Sandwell Council.”

Log on to https://www.nicolarichards.org.uk/ to sign her petition. Scroll down to ‘Latest campaigns” and look for the campaign entitled “Tackling speeding on the Newton Road.”

How To Set Up A Google Business Profile

Creating a Google My Business profile enables your company to get listed locally on the popular search engine. This means that customers can find you more easily when searching for services and products.

Like our own local business listings, Google My Business is totally free to use and can elevate your company to potential customers.

If you’re a start-up or an existing business that has yet to set up a Google Business Profile, then you should look into this option as soon as possible.

Why Is A Business Profile Worth It?

  • You gain more visibility on Google when potential customers are searching for your services.
  • Customers can connect with you via phone calls or messaging.
  • Customers can leave reviews and you can respond to them directly.
  • You can feature products and photos to make your profile more attractive.
  • View reports on how your customers interact with your business profile.

What Does A Google Business Profile Look Like?

Let’s take a look at a local Walsall business called Knight & Doyle, who offer a carpet cleaning service. When internet users use Google to search for the company name, they see this information on the right of the screen.

knight & doyle business

This profile tells them all about the company, including the address, opening hours and directions on where to find them. It also lists some of the products they sell, links to their website and offers a “call” option to get in touch.

You can input the required information yourself when you set up a Google Business Profile via Google My Business.

Google My Business Set-Up

  1. Set up a gmail account. You’ll need this to log in to Google My Business > Create a gmail account.
  2. Log into Google My Business.
  3. Type in your business name exactly how you would like it to appear.
  4. Choose a business category. Start by typing in what your business does and you’ll automatically see a list of relevant categories.
  5. Choose to add a location of your business. If you don’t want potential customers to know your address, simply click no. Otherwise, click “yes” and fill in your address. This will show your full address on your public profile.
  6. Look out for the tick box that states “I deliver goods and services to my customers”. If this is relevant to you, then tick this box as this will ensure that Google does not display your full address.
  7. Add your contact telephone number and your current website URL. If you do not have a website, you can link to a Facebook or Instagram profile or leave this blank.
  8. Enter your mailing address. You must provide an address for your business. This is hidden from the public, but is used for verification purposes.
  9. On the right hand side of the page, you’ll now see the percentage of the listing you have completed. At this point, you can add the hours that your business is open, a description of your business and an image (i.e. a company logo, product or any other relevant picture). You can also add any other photos that would highlight your business in a positive way by clicking “Manage Photos”.
  10. Verify your profile. Once your business is set up, Google will need to verify you. From the left menu when logged into Google My Business, click ‘Verify Now’ or ‘Verify Location’. You’ll need to enter your business phone number and Google will send you a verification code. Enter the code and your business will be verified.

Optimise Your Google My Business Profile

There are many ways to optimise your business profile, depending on what services you’re offering and what message you want to send to customers. This could be by placing your business in more relevant categories, keeping customers up-to-date by adding or switching out images and products, or creating a post that is visible under your profile.

You may have a sale happening, want to highlight a specific product or perhaps have an event to tell people about. In your profile, look for the tab called “Posts” to create your post.

That’s it! It’s as simple as that.  Remember to check the email that you assigned to your Google My Business profile to get feedback on how it’s performing and always respond to reviews, whether positive or negative, to build up customer trust.
