In an effort to reduce congestion, and part of the West Midlands Strategic Transport plan, the closure of the busy junction was due to take place this weekend, but “due to unforeseen circumstances” is now delayed until later this month.

The work will see two new bridges placed over the motorway by a 160ft crane that will drop 130-tonne beams into place. The North bridge will be constructed first with a South bridge due to be constructed later in the summer.

Highways England Project Manager, David Reed, said: “The improvements to this junction will tackle the congestion that drivers, businesses and the local communities have been encountering for a long time. The beam lift is a huge milestone in the construction of the new bridges but we appreciate that any road closures can be frustrating for people.

“We are grateful to people for their patience while we carry out this significant construction work that will bring smoother, more reliable and safer journeys for road users.”

A new date for the planned work is due to be announced shortly.
