Mother Hubbard’s ‘Famous Fish and Chips’ on the Pleck Road opened at 11am on Monday, 6 September with queues down the road after the first 1,000 customers were promised chips at a reduced price. The owners told The Birmingham Mail that the queues were up to three miles long.

The Mother Hubbard’s chain of fish and chip shops started off in Bradford, Yorkshire in 1972 when the price of chips was 42p a bag. The franchise has now expanded into other areas, with the Walsall branch being the latest of its chippies to open.

Further Mother Hubbard branches are expected to open in West Bromwich, Wolverhampton and Dudley.

After the first 1,000 customers have been fed, the price of a bag of chips will go back up to the usual £1.85. Here’s a small selection from the menu.
