Pelsall Novelist Hailed As One Of The Best For 2022

A Walsall writer has celebrated the publication of his debut novel – and it has already been highlighted as one of the best novels for 2022.

Daniel Wiles, who lives in Pelsall, was named in The Observer as one of the top 10 debut novelists of the year and in The Times as one of the best historical novels of the year for his locally based story Mercia’s Take.

Mercia’s Take Story

Published by Swift Press, Mercia’s Take is set in the coal mines of Pelsall and Brownhills in the 1870s and also takes in the industrial landscape of Dudley.

It tells the story of Michael Cash, a miner who is desperate to earn enough money so that his young son, Luke, can go to school and not have to follow in his footsteps.

When he finds a seam of gold in his station at the Pelsall Hall Colliery, he hopes this will help to seal a better future for his family, but his unscrupulous workmate wants more than his fair share.

The conflict between the two men leads to a raw tale of greed, fear, violence and humility.

The story is peppered with local dialect in both the dialogue and the narrative sections – something 26-year-old Daniel, who has a Masters in creative and prose fiction from the University of East Anglia (UEA), said he worked hard to perfect over the 30 drafts he wrote.

“My appreciation of the local dialect was something that grew on me when I was finishing my first degree at the University of Wolverhampton,” said Daniel, whose Masters was funded by a Booker Prize Foundation scholarship.

“When I was at UEA, I had classmates from America, Israel, India and Hong Kong and they completely understood what was being said. I had to make an educated guess about the local dialect from the 1870s, based on my research and experience of talking to my grandparents from Blakenall.

“It’s definitely a huge part of the book and something I worked hard on to make it as authentic as possible.”

Daniel, who went to Shelfield Academy before studying fine art at Walsall College and later creative writing and film studies at the University of Wolverhampton, said his interest in writing developed after deciding he wanted to work in film.

“I didn’t know you could be a writer when I was growing up,” he said. “I was never really interested in reading and writing when I was at school, but when I left I became obsessed with film and wanted to be a film maker.

“From there I started writing screenplays and then into short stories. At the start of the Masters, we had to submit a piece of work for a workshop, where other students pick it apart.

“I submitted the section about Michael down the mine, but I didn’t know where the story was going then. Over time, it grew into what it is now. The criticism at university really helped me; you develop a thick skin.”

Daniel, who spent time in the Walsall Local History Centre to do his research on the local mining industry, completed his finished novel in January 2021 and approached about 20 literary agents, but it was not picked up by any of them.

When he came across the newly launched Swift Press, an independent publisher, he submitted the novel and it was accepted just a day after.

Although he was “happy and surprised” to be named in The Times and Observer earlier this year, he is more proud that Mercia’s Take was praised by award-winning historical author Hilary Mantel, who wrote Wolf Hall and Bring Up The Bodies.

“It was nice to be recognised by The Times and The Observer, but getting praise from writers such as Hilary Mantel was exciting for me,” said Daniel. “She contacted me and wished me good luck, which was great. She is a really inspirational writer for me.”

Daniel is now finishing his second novel, which is based in the Midlands in the period between the Romans leaving England and before the arrival of the Anglo Saxons, and is also gathering ideas for a third book.

Mercia’s Take is available in bookshops and via the Swift Press website.

Walsall Rocked By Earthquake

Walsall was at the epicentre of an earthquake which shook the West Midlands last night (21 February).

At approximately 11pm on Monday night, tremors were felt sending residents flooding to social media to share the news and speculate on what the rumbling noises were.

Experts from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre have stated that the earthquake had a depth of 20km, being felt in both Birmingham, Wolverhampton and other areas of the West Midlands.

Now confirmed to be a 2.8 magnitude earthquake, some Walsall residents reported windows and walls shaking.

It’s speculated that the exact epicentre of the earthquake was Andrew Road on the Sandwell border of Walsall, which would have felt the worse of the tremor.

The last notable earthquake in the region was on September 22, 2002, where Dudley was the epic-centre of a 4.7 magnitude earthquake which was felt across the UK.

gina bains with book

Gina Bains has published Angel’s Journey, the follow-up to her 2018 book Angel and Her Companion, and it is already selling like hot cakes.

Gina, who works full time as a mental health carer with Select HealthCare Group, said she was proud to have finally published the novel after three years in the making.

Angel’s Journey Could Become A Short Film

The fantasy story follows Angel, a special woman who is an outcast but who has incredible powers. Although she faces many problems on her journey, she is determined that nothing should stop her from following her dreams.

The author is now looking for an animator to help turn the story into a short film.

“I want every child and grown up to know Angel’s story,” she said. “This is a really positive, feel-good story about not giving up.

“Once I finished the first book I started this second one and wrote it when I finished work. I work really long hours but writing helped me to stay positive and I’m really pleased at the reception it has had from people who enjoyed the first book.

“I sent the Queen a copy of the first book and received a lovely letter from Buckingham Palace and have just had another wonderful letter after I sent Her Majesty the second.

“I’m determined to get Angel’s Journey made into an animated film and am looking for people who can help me do that and I’m also finishing off my third novel, which I hope I’ll do this year.”

Gina also appeared on Kanshi TV, a West Bromwich based channel, to discuss her book.

Angel’s Journey is published by Maple Publishers and is available at Waterstones, WH Smith and Amazon.

Hidden Hippo Trail Competition Offers Up To £1000 Worth Of Prizes

A competition involved Walsall’s Hidden Hippo Trail where Walsall residents can win up to £300 in ShopAppy vouchers has launched.

walsall hippo

The AR discovery trail, which launched in October 2021, invites local people to search around the town for camouflaged hippos which come to life when viewed through a special app.

To enter the competition, you simply have to find one of the hidden hippos, take a selfie with it and upload it to the Walsall online website.

A random draw will be made from all entries with one winner receiving £300 of vouchers, second-place receiving £150 and 11 runners-up getting £50 each.

Speaking about the trail, Deputy Leader of Walsall Council, Cllr Adrian Andrew said:

“The Hippo Trail has proved very popular and now we’re using it to promote local retailers. Independent traders are vital if we’re to regenerate our High Streets and ShopAppy helps them compete with the national chains online. There are exciting times ahead in the Town Centre as a number of projects are getting underway to transform the look and feel of the place to make it a brighter, safer and more welcoming destination.”

ShopAppy is supported by Walsall Council and allows customers to divert their online browsing to local spending. Any retailers wishing to register can go to ShopAppy.com/Vendor

Funding for the hippo project has come from the EU and Walsall Council Build Back Better fund and is supported by Lord Wei and associates. The idea has been developed by Urban Futures and delivered with local partners Urban Hax.

£150 Council Tax Rebate Coming In April

Walsall residents will receive a £150 reduction to their Council Tax bill in April as energy prices are set to increase by 54%.

The one-off nationwide rebate will be given to households who are currently in Council Tax Bands A-D, approximately 80% of households across England.

walsall council house

Payments will be made after April 1 and arrive automatically to those who have their Council Tax set up as a direct debit.

To see if you’re eligible for the council tax rebate, simply search for your postcode using the government search tool.

How To Claim Council Tax Rebate If You Do Not Have A Direct Debit

You can now apply online to get your bank account credited if you do not have a direct debit set-up. Simply. go the energy rebate website and scroll down to “Apply online to get your bank account credited.”

Councillor Adrian Andrew, Deputy Leader, Walsall Council said, “The council will support you to access help and advice in tackling high energy bills and improving the heating and insulation of your home. This national government funding offering a council tax rebate of £150 in addition will support many households with managing these costs”

“To help us make this process easier and to get the payment to you quicker, I encourage those of you that do not currently pay their council tax by direct debit to make sure you get these details to us promptly when you are asked for them.”

Energy Bill Rebate Coming In October

The rebate follows news of a £200 discount on energy bills being given to households in October. This automatic “energy bill rebate” has to be paid back at the cost of £40 a year over five years starting in 2023 by everyone who pays for energy during this period.

A recent survey conducted by MoneySavingExpert reveals that 57% of the 1,665 polled about the energy bill rebate would opt-out of receiving the cash if they could. However, the October rebate is compulsory and will be given to everyone who pays energy bills.

Some of those against the scheme believe that it would penalise some people, for example those who currently don’t pay energy bills currently, but do so between 2023-2028 and therefore still be eligible for the £40 a year payment for money they didn’t receive.

Rose Tribute Made To 119 Walsall Victims Of Road Accidents

A tribute of 119 roses representing young people who have been seriously injured or killed on the streets of Walsall due to driving accidents has been made by Walsall Council this week.

To coincide with a campaign to raise awareness of road safety, the roses were displayed at the Wisemore campus at Walsall College and represent each young person aged 17-24 who have suffered as a result of being a driver or a passenger in a vehicle over the past 12 months.

Students were also given the opportunity to experience a road safety driving simulator to understand how their actions can impact others on the road.

Councillor Adrian Andrew, Portfolio Holder with responsibility for Regeneration & Transportation, said: “This campaign identifies the terrible consequences for both drivers and passengers when things go wrong.

“The display of roses, representing the tragic loss of life through dangerous driving, has captured the attention of students at Walsall College. This provided an opportunity for our Road Safety Officers to have many engaging discussions with young people today to encourage better driver and pedestrian behaviour and road safety.”

Walsall Fans Organise Protest At Tranmere Match

Walsall Football Club fans are planning a protest outside the Banks’s Stadium before and after the home match against Tranmere Rovers this Saturday, 12 February.

walsall fc

A statement released by the Independent Saddlers Supporters’ Association (ISSA) states that the peaceful protest is “to display our dissatisfaction with the way our club is being run and how we are being treated as supporters.”

The Saddlers are currently 21st in the table in League Two, just four points clear of the relegation zone after seven straight losses on the pitch saw Head Coach Matt Taylor part company with the club earlier this week.

The protest is planned at 2.15pm outside the stadium and will also take place after the match.

ISSA states that the protest is not against the team, but at the way the club is being run, citing a poor matchday experience and communication issues between the club and supporters, as well as concerns about the performance of Technical Director, Jamie Fullarton.

Part of the ISSA statement reads:

“We feel now is the time we have to stand together and fight for positive change at the club we love so much. For all the supporters that give their time, money and devotion. For all the Saddlers who are no longer with us who showed us the way, who we spent our time following Walsall with making memories that will live with us forever. And for the children who we are trying to encourage to be lifelong Walsall supporters, so they can experience a brighter future following Walsall Football Club. We simply can’t sit back and watch the Club we love die in front of our eyes.”

Walsall are currently seeking a new manager with Stoke City’s assistant manager Dean Holden currently favourite with the bookies to take the hot seat.
