Walsall Gets Ready To Celebrate Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

Over 40 roads in Walsall will be closed this weekend (June 3-5) as the UK gets ready to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with numerous street parties.

In addition, numerous community events are planned over the June Bank Holiday weekend, including family day at Walsall Art Gallery with Royalty-inspired creative activities for the children and the chance to grab a cuppa and a cupcake.

There are many other events being held at local churches and community venues, including St. Martin’s Church on the corner of Sutton Road, Pelsall Community Centre and St. Matthew’s Church.

An invite-only event is also planned at Barr Beacon on Thursday, 2 June where the skies will be lit up with the traditional lighting of the beacon to pay tribute to the Queen.

Councillor Garry Perry, the council’s deputy leader for resilient communities, said: “We have received an overwhelming response to place our communities at the forefront of the borough’s Jubilee celebrations. We extended the deadline for street closure applications which ended on Sunday, May 15, and officers are busy processing over 40 applications.

“While street parties are clearly for residents of the streets concerned, there are many other community events open to all we will be promoting in the next few weeks. Our communities are what makes Walsall a place of welcome.

“We offered limited financial support to our communities so they can plan to celebrate with their neighbours and I’m genuinely delighted that we’re supporting over 100 community-led events across the borough in their Jubilee celebrations.”

A full list of road closures has yet to be announced.

New Mayor of Walsall for 2022 Announced

The new Mayor of Walsall has been revealed this week to take over from Councillor Rose Burley, who has held the post over the last year.

Councillor Rose Martin, who was first elected in 2013 and represents the Pelsall Ward, was handed the robes and chains of office in a ceremony on Monday 23 May 2022 where she was elected as Walsall Mayor for 2022-23.

Councillor Chris Towe was elected as Deputy Mayor.

Councillor Rose Martin, the Mayor of Walsall, said: “It’s an immense honour and privilege to become Mayor of Walsall and I’d like to thank Councillor Rose Burley for all her hard work during her term of office. I’d also like to pay tribute to former Councillor Sarohi who, due to his sad passing, was unable to become Mayor himself this year. Councillor Sarohi was a kind and caring gentleman who is missed by many.

“It’s going to be a busy start with the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations and I’m looking forward to meeting residents across the borough. My chosen charities for the year are WellWishers, FastAid and the Walsall Community Network, three very worthwhile local causes.”

This week, Walsall Council also released a promotional video called “We Are Walsall – 2040” showcasing the town as they plan to regenerated the town over the coming years.

Drain Covers Going Missing In Walsall

West Midlands Police are investigating the theft of 35 drain covers taken from roadsides in Walsall since last weekend, bringing the total to 50 drain cover thefts this month.

The drain covers have largely gone missing in the Bloxwich and Willenhall area with reports that the thieves were wearing high visibility clothing and driving a white 2006 Transit van.

It’s presumed that the covers are being sold as scrap metal.

The issue is causing some concern due to the risk to pedestrians and road users, particularly at night when the hole that is left is harder to spot.

Councillor Adrian Andrew, Deputy Leader of Walsall Council, said:

“We are deploying a fast response team to make each reported location safe and for replacement covers to be installed as soon as possible. However, in most cases this means having to dig up the road and install a new drain cover and metal frame which is both time consuming and costly.”

The thefts have been reported to West Midlands Police who are investigating the thefts. It is thought that the covers may have been taken to be sold as scrap metal.

Councillor Andrew added:

“I would encourage members of the public to help us tackle thefts by being extra vigilant and to report any missing manholes or gully covers as soon as possible to our contact centre on 01922 650000.”

Heartfelt Leaving Message From Walsall Pub Licensee Highlights Industry Struggles

A Walsall pub licensee has offered an eye-browsing raising insight into the plight of pubs up and down the country.

With less people venturing out due to COVID restrictions over the last couple of years, it’s been tough enough for licensees. However, even with customers back in pubs, they are now facing high energy prices and increased costs from suppliers and breweries.

Posting on Facebook, the landlord of the Sir Robert Peel in Bloxwich revealed that they’re stepping away from the pub and say that they’ve been “priced out of making a living”.

Walsall  Landlord Discusses Rising Prices

“Unfortunately the powers above me have become extra greedy and with the governments new alcohol and utility rises and the brewery increasing their charges in April we have basically been priced out of making a living,” reads the post.

The post goes on to explain that they would need be charging £4.50/£5 pint to hit the same gross profit as they were six weeks ago in an area of the country where residents simply won’t pay those prices, when they can nip to the nearby Wetherspoons for a much cheaper pint at a time when counting the pennies is becoming even more crucial.

To put the costs into context, the Sir Robert Peel licensee gives the following explanation, offering an insight into the financial pressures of running a pub:

“The cost of just holding the keys is £2255 per week, rent, electric, gas and water and waste management but that’s without having a drop of alcohol in the building and without any staff,

Add 2 full time staff and 10 barrels of draught products and you’re not far off 4 grand, A WEEK!

and still, the fridges are empty, no pop, bottles or BIBs and you don’t have a bottle of spirits in the building,

You’ve stocked up, now you’re close to 7k in the red and don’t have a customer yet or sold a drink

Now you’ve done everything as you should with this new pricing malarkey and you’re ready to open, you can’t charge £5 a pint because we live in Bloxwich and you’ll get laughed at, so let’s assume you’re happy with making 30% GP on barrels, take in to account spirits are around 70% GP which brings your overall to around 40% GP overall given the ratio split of high and low GP Stock, you have about 5k in stock, so if, AND THIS IS A MASSIVE IF…

You sold absolutely every drop you had, you’d have £7000, but you started the week by putting out 7k, oh. And don’t forget the tax liability you need to save for your staff, and you best keep that 20% from your wet sales because the vat man will want his share too, payroll and accountant services are also due,so now you’ve worked 40+ hours yourself, kept the machine well oiled everyone’s been paid, bills are paid but now you can’t replace the stock you have sold and have earned absolutely ZERO income for yourself, and about £800 in debt after 7 days and a 7 grand outlay.

What happens to your rent/mortgage, cars/travel, shopping, kids, life?

Also £7000 is £1000 a day, to make £1000 a day you’d have to sell on overage 285 pints a day, over a solid 9 hour period that’s a pint every 2 minutes .

WELCOME TO OUR REALITY.”

Prior to leaving the Sir Robert Peel for good and handing over the keys, the licensees have decided to close Monday-Thursday as they reassess their future, which doesn’t look likely to be in the pub trade.
