Aldridge Tattoo Studio Announces Charity Event

BW Tattoo Studios in Aldridge, Walsall is hosting a charity event on Sunday 15 August with all proceeds going towards The James Brindley Foundation and the fight against knife crime and youth violence.

Talented tattoo artists at the local studio are busy designing custom tattoos that reflect the cause with money raised going towards the charity’s latest projects.

26-year-old James Brindley from Aldridge died in 2017 when he was stabbed on the way home. The motive for the attack is unknown, but local teenager Anmar Kahrod was convicted of the crime and is now serving a life sentence in prison.

The James Brindley Foundation has worked tirelessly to help families who suffer similar tragedies and to promote  pro-social behaviour amongst youths.

To help, all you need to do is pre-book and get tattooed on Sunday 15 August by contacting BW Tattoo Studios on 01922 277717.

In collaboration with the Aldridge tattoo parlour, we’re also running a competition until 15 July where you can win a tattoo up to the value of £400.

Pressure Mounts For Bank Holiday Following Euro 2021 Final

A petition to Parliament for Monday 12 July to be declared a bank holiday has now reached over 300,000 signatures.

With England facing Italy at Wembley in Sunday’s Euro 2020 final, fans are piling the pressure on Boris Johnson for a day off to celebrate or commiserate the day after the anticipated match, which sees the host nation in a major tournament final since 1966.

The Euro 2021 final takes place at Wembley on Sunday, 11 July.

England vs Italy kicks off at 8pm on Sunday. The match will finish at 9.45pm at the earliest, but could continue much later if it hits extra time and penalties.

The petition, hosted on the parliament website, states:

Sunday 8pm is a difficult time for families to plan to be together for the event – knowing we have an additional day off the next day would significantly help this. Furthermore, a historic win should be celebrated. It would be expected for the winning team to parade the trophy, and a Bank Holiday would be a perfect time to do this. Also, English people would naturally want to continue to enjoy the win, giving the retail and leisure industry a much-needed opportunity to make up lost revenues.

Petitions getting over 100,000 signatures are discussed for debate in parliament.

A spokesman for the Prime Minister responded by saying: “I don’t want to pre-empt the outcome of Sunday’s match. Clearly we want England to go all the way and win the final, and then we will set out our plans in due course.”

Boris has also commented on the prospect of a bank holiday on Monday. While attending an opening ceremony at energy company Bulb’s headquarters on Thursday, he said:  “I think that would be tempting fate; let’s see what happens.”

Cat Food Recall Following Hundreds Of Pet Deaths

Cat owners are being asked to check whether the food they are feeding their pets is on the recall list following a spate of deaths liked to a rare illness.

cat

Pancytopenia, which vets say can be linked to a cat’s diet, has been sweeping the country. ITV News reports that hundreds of cats have died from the illness and cases are continuing to rise.

The Royal Veterinary College first raised concerns in May after seeing a spike in cases of pancytopenia over a four-week period.

“The cats are severely unwell, have spontaneous bleeding and require often multiple transfusion for stabilisation prior to any investigation being possible,” said Dr Barbara Glanemann, Senior Lecturer in Small Animal Medicine and Co-head of the Small Animal Internal Medicine Service.

Statistics released on Thursday 1 July state that 443 cats have been diagnosed with the illness and 284 have died. The Royal Veterinary College states that only one case per year is usually typical.

A number of cat foods are being recalled as a precaution while investigations take place. Speaking to ITV News, the Food Standards Agency says that it is looking at possible causes, including cat food contamination.

Councillor Adrian Andrew, Deputy Leader, Regeneration said: “Walsall Council will be playing our part in the nation’s call to help and welcome these brave people who were a vital part of the British Army’s operations in Afghanistan.”

“We are pledging to support a similar number to those we are seeing in other areas across the country by offering to provide homes for 80 individuals, helping them to settle and become part of the community here in Walsall.”

Princess Diana Statue Unveiled On Her 60th Birthday

A new statue of Princess Diana was unveiled today on what would have been her 60th birthday.

Taking pride of place in the Sunken Garden at Kensington Palace in London, the statue was commissioned four years ago by Diana’s sons, Prince William and Prince Harry.

The private event to reveal the statue also marked the first time that the pair have met in person since the funeral of their grandfather, Prince Phillip.

The statue was designed by sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley, who is most well known for creating the effigy of H.M. Queen Elizabeth II that appears on all UK and Commonwealth coinage.

Work to re-design the Sunken Garden was overseen by Gardens & Estates Operations Manager, Graham Dillamore, who knew Princess Diana. Landscape architect Pip Morrison also played a huge part in the redesign, which has reportedly taken 1,000 hours to complete.

Take a look at the Sunken Garden redesign.

In a statement released by Kensington Palace, Dillamore said:

“While she was in residence at Kensington Palace, Diana, Princess of Wales regularly admired the changing floral displays in the Sunken Garden and would always stop to talk with me and the other gardeners who cared for it.

Over three decades later, I’m honored to have been part of the team preparing the garden for the installation of this statue. We’ve incorporated a number of the princess’s favorite flowers into the design, and I hope that visitors to the palace and gardens will enjoy its peaceful setting, and take a moment to reflect on the life and legacy of the princess.”

Search For Milk Carton Boys Continues 25 Years Later

25 years after David Spencer (11) and Patrick Warren (13) disappeared on Boxing Day 1996 in Solihull, local residents have taken the matter into their own hands and began searching for the boys following a fresh tip-off.

Led by Lee O’ Toole, brother of David Spencer, a group of men have begun digging five miles from the family home following a tip off that a suspect was seen digging on the land prior to the boys going missing.

The new information came to light following a Channel 4 documentary called “The Footsteps of Killers” which recently aired about the incident.

Dubbed the Milk Carton kids, after being the first missing people to appear on the front of milk cartons as part of a National Missing Persons Helpline campaign, David and Patrick were last seen around midnight on December 26, 1996 in Chelmsley Wood at a petrol station and are suspected to have been killed.

In the documentary, Mike Amyes from Solihull told the film crew that he spotted a suspect at the time, a man called Brian Field, digging near to Solihull Moors FC football ground a couple of days prior to the boys going missing.

Convicted child killer and paedophile, Field was sentenced to life in prison in 2001 for the murder and rape of Surrey pupil Roy Tutill in 1968. However, Field was interviewed by police and was not charged in connection with the disappearance of the two Solhull boys due to insufficient evidence.

Though police have encouraged the public not to go digging for the missing schoolboys, dozens have joined the search.

An Instagram video of the search, shows some of the searchers claiming they have found bones and children’s clothes on the site.

A force spokesperson said: “We recognise and sympathise with the strong sense of feeling surrounding the disappearance of Patrick Warren and David Spencer in 1996.

“It’s highly emotive for their families, friends and the wider community.

“We understand there are many frustrations and a lack of trust around our initial investigation and the many reviews we’ve carried out since.

“We also know a group has been set up encouraging people to take matters into their own hands and dig at the back of a football ground in Damson Wood Lane.

“We’d urge people not to do this. Searching should be left to us and is based on areas of interest, we use trained specialist experts who are able to preserve any evidence that may be found.

“We’re in touch with the Spencer family, and others, who are providing new information.”

Walsall Businesses Invited To Clean Up With Litter Picking Equipment

Walsall Council has launched a litter charter aimed at encouraging local businesses to keep their shop fronts litter-free.

Simon Betteridge of Betteridge Butchers in Bentley is the first to sign up

In return for pledging to the Litter Charter, businesses will be given litter picking equipment to help them tidy up.

Other benefits of participation in the project include the promotion of your business participation in the scheme and education for staff to promote the anti-litter message.

Councillor Oliver Butler, portfolio holder for Clean and Green, said “We’ve got to find new ways of keeping the borough clean and our new Litter Charter is a good way forward to help make the borough as clean and green as possible.”

“I must applaud Simon on stepping up and leading the way, hopefully for other businesses to follow suit. If you are a local business that take pride in keeping our borough clean, then I encourage you to get in touch with the team to find out how you can be involved. If all local retailers would commit to spending just a matter of minutes each day cleaning up their frontages it would make a huge difference.”

M6 Junction 10 Closure Postponed

The planned closure of M6 Junction 10 which was due to take place on Friday, 2 July has been postponed.

M6 Junction 10 when it’s complete

In an effort to reduce congestion, and part of the West Midlands Strategic Transport plan, the closure of the busy junction was due to take place this weekend, but “due to unforeseen circumstances” is now delayed until later this month.

The work will see two new bridges placed over the motorway by a 160ft crane that will drop 130-tonne beams into place. The North bridge will be constructed first with a South bridge due to be constructed later in the summer.

Highways England Project Manager, David Reed, said: “The improvements to this junction will tackle the congestion that drivers, businesses and the local communities have been encountering for a long time. The beam lift is a huge milestone in the construction of the new bridges but we appreciate that any road closures can be frustrating for people.

“We are grateful to people for their patience while we carry out this significant construction work that will bring smoother, more reliable and safer journeys for road users.”

A new date for the planned work is due to be announced shortly.

New Walsall Tattoo Studio Adds A Modern Twist

Offering tattoos and piercings from professionally trained artists, BW Tattoo Studios in Aldridge has recently expanded on the success of its popular Lichfield branch, despite the challenges that lockdown brought for many local businesses.

Now the owner of two premium tattoo parlours, with the Aldridge tattoo parlour only opening a couple of months ago, owner and artist Craig Startin spoke with Pioneer Magazines to tell us about his story as he quit the corporate life in search of this dream and battled through the challenges of lockdown.

From The Supermarket To The Tattoo Shop

The light bulb switched on in Craig’s head as he sat in a Co-op board meeting. He was a supermarket manager, who had spent years climbing the corporate ladder after joining the YTS scheme, straight from school.

But as he sat and listened to the talk about performance and profit, supply and stock, he suddenly realised he had designs on a different kind of life.

A safari sleeve, created by Aldridge tattoo artist, Brandon.

“I just thought ‘what am I doing here?’” he remembers. “I thought to myself, this isn’t what I wanted to be. It wasn’t the life that I wanted. So, I decided to make a change.”

Nearly 15 years later Craig, with the support of his wife Jenny, has an altogether different design for life – as one of the area’s best-known tattooists.

And with a new studio just opened in Aldridge – adding to the successful studio they already run in Lichfield – it’s clear Craig made the right move to follow his dream.

He said: “At school, I was very much into art and photography and I realised that I had just ended up climbing this corporate ladder. So, I changed my profession.

“I got back into drawing and luckily a friend of mine had a tattoo studio, and they gave me a shot. It all built from there.”

The result of more than a decade of work is BW Tattoo Studios, which opened its new Aldridge premises in Rookery Lane straight out of lockdown.

“Lockdown was crippling for us,” Craig said, “because we just couldn’t trade. But we’re looking ahead now, with the new Aldridge studio open for six weeks.”

Like the Lichfield studio, the new Aldridge site is unlike the traditional view of the dingy tattoo parlour, offering a bright, welcoming environment.

Inside the Aldridge tattoo studio

“We’ve never really been into that old-fashioned tattoo culture, so there’s a different look to how we have done things,” Craig explained, “we wanted to make it a little more homely and comfortable for people.

“The premises used to be a beauty salon, with cubicles and treatment rooms, but we realised the spaces weren’t big enough to do what we wanted to do and feel comfortable about it. So, we ripped everything out and redid the whole studio to how we wanted it.”

The team offer tattooing, piercing and laser removal, using the very latest technology in a modern, COVID-secure setting. They also stock a large range of luxury piercing jewellery so clients don’t have to get pierced with plain studs. It’s all about delivering a friendly customer experience.

And when it comes to tattoos, BW like their artists to develop individual skillsets so customers can rely on expertise.

“We try to have artists that specialise in different areas and popular styles – such as black and grey, or colour realism – so there’s somebody available to deliver what a customer wants, regardless of the style” Craig said.

During his time in the industry, Craig has seen lots of changes – from the technology available to the style of designs, and also the way that people with tattoos are perceived.

Bryan Sharratt, who has a passion for Japanese and black and grey realism, joined the BW Tattoo Studios team in June.

Tattoo Studios Evolve

He said: “The industry is always changing. For a start, the machinery just keeps evolving, giving us different ways of working the skin to create more fantastic designs.

“If you don’t embrace new technology you tend to get left in its wake, so we stay up to date.

“The kind of tattoos that people want has changed too. Where you used to walk into a shop and look on the wall and pick a design, now we custom design for clients. So, they may come in with four or five ideas, and we can help build a personal, special design for them.

“Sometimes they come in having seen another tattoo that they like and want the same thing, but even then, we try to help them modify it a little to make it personal and different.

tattoo chairs

A bright and open environment.

“But most of all, the perception of what kind of person has tattoos has changed. It was traditionally regarded as a rebellious thing to do, and had some quite negative things attached to it, but the culture has completed changed now.

“A lot of it is down to footballers to – people like David Beckham – there doesn’t seem to be a footballer on the field these days without a full sleeve!

“But tattoos these days are seen as a way for people to express themselves as an individual, in a much more positive, creative way.”

That creative spark is what drove Craig after he stepped away from his corporate life to become a tattooist, and now he is determined to give others the same opportunity.

“I’ve tried to give other people the same chance that I had to follow a creative path,” he said, “which is why we have always taken apprentices.

“At our Lichfield studio there are a few fully-fledged tattooists who started with us as an apprentice, and we have one in Aldridge too.

“I’ve tried to give everybody that chance because it’s something that happened to me.”
