The 35-year-old from Brownhills has already proven she has amazing skills in the kitchen after creating life-sized cakes of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle as a tribute to the royal couple’s pregnancy in 2018, but this is the first time she’s been offered such mega money to create a custom cake.

Jason Derulo asked Laura to create a life-size edible sculpture of him after seeing her designs on the Lara Cake Anything Instagram page and they created a fun TikTok video of Laura receiving the initial call from the singer.

The design took Lara three days to craft, weighs 100kg and is made from red velvet, chocolate and plain sponge cake.

Since, Lara revealed the design, she has been inundated with requests.

The scheme runs until 26 November and takes place at various community service locations across Walsall.

Those meeting the vulnerability requirements (which is assessed over the telephone) can book an appointment and meet face-to-face with an advisor who can help them with any council-related enquiries, including how to access key services, such as booking a bulky waste collection.

Councillor Garry Perry, Deputy Leader Resilient Communities said, “This customer support offer for our vulnerable residents is being piloted as a direct result of feedback from the community and aims to help them with access to services and support that can help to make a significant difference to their help and wellbeing.”

“Vulnerable people can book at a range of community-based venues on a day and time when it is convenient for them, giving them the flexibility they need and provided at a local accessible venue.”

Organised by the Lichfield and Hatherton Canals Restoration Trust, the event takes place on Saturday September 18 and Sunday September 19 and is free to enter.

LHCRT communications, events and membership director Christine Howles said:

“We are bringing back the Brownhills Canal Festival after a few years’ absence, with the last event hosted by Birmingham Canal Navigations Society in 2019.

“We were approached by Brownhills resident (and LHCRT member) Malcolm Littler, who asked if we could help arrange the festival

“As Brownhills is at the top end of the Lichfield Canal it made sense for us to help out, promote Brownhills as a canal town, raise awareness of the link the Lichfield Canal will bring to the canal network and to Brownhills, and create a fun weekend for everyone.

“Traditionally held in the summer, we have chosen September for the event.”

As well as trading boats and stalls selling everything from homemade fudge to hard-carved goods, they’ll be an array of historic boats on show and entertainment for the whole family to enjoy.

The Story Behind The Art That Lights Up Harden Road In Goscote

You may have seen these giant art works as you drive through Goscote – Jayne Howarth finds out more.

The NHS banner, in tribute to those working on the frontline during the Covid-19 pandemic

Walsall charity workers have been keeping people’s spirits up with their colourful artwork in front of The Harden Centre, in Goscote.

Stella Pettifer, who works for St Aidan’s Care Team, and her colleagues Lisa Tipton and Kim Downes spend hours thinking about how they can create eye-catching seasonal displays or artwork that celebrates big events.

Last month, they created a piece of art about the Tokyo Olympics and earlier this year, there was one that paid tribute to NHS workers during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. Other displays include those for Easter, Halloween and Christmas.

Christmas display

Each one is painted on to wood and is about 44ft long and more than 6ft 5inches high – and it takes about ten days from the first drawing concept to completion.

The installations have been made on large sheets of material, after the team received a substantial donation of rolls of cotton, but now they are done on wood, which are stronger and more stable.

Disney-themed art for Christmas

“We’ve been making the displays for about 14 years and have covered all kinds of events from royal weddings to the World Cup, VE Day and Poppy Day,” said Stella.

“We tend to do seasonal ones and then anything special that involves England sports teams or Great Britain. After the Olympics one we repurposed it for the Paralympics, using its logo.

Goscote Art Brings Smiles To Faces Of Locals

“We love doing them because they brighten up the space and we know they bring a smile to people’s faces. We’ll be doing one for Halloween next and will then put up one for Poppy Day, as well as decorate the fence at Harden Hall care home across the road.”

Although they focus on national sporting events, the St Aidan’s Care Team made an exception for Walsall Football Club in 2015, when the team made it to Wembley for the Football League Trophy final.

They made their first artwork in 2009 after seeing a festive display out of town when they took a group of youngsters from the Harden Centre, where the charity runs run playgroups and youth clubs, to see Father Christmas. Stella said she knew she could do better.

“The children were enchanted by it but I thought I could do one lot better, so when we got back we got to work and did one,” she said. “It went down really well and it’s just gone on since then. We look forward to putting them up.

“It’s a lot of work and the painting takes the longest time, but we try to reuse what we can so as not to waste resources. Next year will be busy as it the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, so we’ll have to do something good for that.”

The artwork can be seen at the centre, on Harden Road, Goscote, WS3 1RQ.

The 2021 Women’s Tour is coming to Walsall this October.

2021 women's tour competitors

The international women’s cycle race was postponed last year due to COVID-19.  Organisers, the SweetSpot Group, also postponed the 2021 race for the summer, but have now laid out plans for the sporting event to take place between 4-9 October, 2021.

The first stage is set to begin Bicester, Oxfordshire and end in Felixstowe, Suffolk, with the start and finish of stage 2 taking place in Walsall on Tuesday 5 October.

There are family activities being planned to celebrate the event in the town centre and the Arboretum, with more details released shortly. Walsall Council is calling on any local businesses that want to be involved to decorate their shopfronts for the occasion or get in touch for sponsorship opportunities.

Cllr Adrian Andrew, Deputy Leader of Walsall Council, said: “We’re excited to be hosting a stage of this prestigious race and look forward to welcoming cycling fans to the town in October. The delay is understandable but it will be worth the wait. I’m sure the people of Walsall and the wider region will turn out in numbers to cheer the riders on. This is a great opportunity for the borough and will hopefully inspire more people to take to two wheels.”

Mick Bennett, Women’s Tour race director, said: “Having been born and raised in the West Midlands it’s really exciting to be taking the Women’s Tour to Walsall for the first time in 2021. We thank Walsall Council for their support of the race and its push for gender equality – I’m counting down to October already!”

British Cycling’s cycling delivery director, Dani Every, said: “The growth of the Women’s Tour plays a crucial role in our ongoing ambition to get more women and girls on bicycles, and we’re sure that the riders on show later this year will help to inspire more women to get in the saddle in the West Midlands and beyond. “It’s great to see the event continuing to broaden its reach, with a debut stage in Walsall highlighting the ever-growing profile of and demand for the race. This in turn supports our own drive to address the gender imbalance within our sport and our commitment to doing all we can to support female cyclists, coaches and volunteers across the disciplines.”

Full details of the Walsall stage of the 2021 Women’s Tour are due to revealed in the summer.

New Perry Barr Railway Station Shaping Up For Birmingham 2022

The redesigned £30.8million Perry Barr railway station is shaping up nicely to be ready in time for Birmingham 2022.

In fact, it’s going so well that the West Midlands Combined Authority expect it to be ready for Spring 2022 ahead of June’s Commonwealth Games.

Current progress includes the erection of the huge steel frame which forms the base of the new station building.

The station, which is a couple of miles from Alexandra Stadium, will be fully accessible and include lifts, as well as a new ticket office and toilet facilities.

Cllr Sleigh said: “It was only a few weeks ago that the old station was demolished so it is encouraging to see such rapid progress being made on site.

“This railway station will not only be a new gateway for visitors to Alexander Stadium for the Commonwealth Games next year, but also provide a more welcoming and accessible facility for residents of Perry Barr for years to come.

“This investment in rail and bus travel will be complemented by the development of the Sprint rapid bus route on the A34 and new cycling and walking routes to offer residents alternatives to the car and help the region achieve its ambition to be net-zero carbon by 2041.”

The project is part of the Perry Barr regeneration programme, which will see new housing, public spaces and improvement to public transport in the area.
