Walsall Schools Urged To Re-Introduce COVID-Secure Measures

Walsall Council is calling on all Walsall schools to reintroduce COVID-secure measures from Monday 18 October.

The plea comes from Walsall Council’s Director of Public Health Stephen Gunther after 1,100 cases of positive tests were reported in the last seven days, with half of them from children between 0-19.

The measures include:

  • Class bubbles
  • Staggered lunch breaks and start and finish times
  • All non-essential events online
  • Masks in communal areas (secondary only)
  • Year-group bubbles (secondary only)
  • Teaching staff social distancing (secondary only)
  • COVID management for PE (secondary only)

Stephen Gunther, Director of Public Health for Walsall said:

“With cases of COVID-19 high again in Walsall – including those in the under-19 age groups – we think now is the time for schools to bring back COVID-secure measures.

“Although younger children with no underlying health conditions are less likely to become very ill from the virus, there is a chance that other family members may be more severely affected, particularly those who are clinically vulnerable.

“While they are not compulsory, we hope that they will help schools in the prevention and management of COVID-19 outbreaks and enable children to continue to attend lessons as normal.

“We continue to keep outbreaks in schools under close review and the Public Health team remains available to advise every school on the appropriate measures.”

The news comes as the COVID -19 vaccination scheme rolls out in Walsall schools with children between 12-15 eligible for a Pfizer vaccine. Parents will be notified of their school’s arrangements and receive consent forms shortly.

Deadline For Secondary School Applications Looms

Walsall Council is urging parents to submit their applications for secondary school before the national deadline to increase chances of getting their preferred school for their child.

geometry

Children in Year 6, born between 1 September 2010 and 31 August 2011 will be heading to secondary school in September 2022 and there’s just a couple of weeks left to submit your application. The deadline is a national deadline so applies to all secondary school applications across the country.

The application form can be filled in online, allowing parents to choose up to five secondary schools.

Councillor Chris Towe, Portfolio Holder for Education and Skills said, “I strongly urge parents and carers to make sure that you maximise your chances of obtaining a year 7 place at one of your preferred schools by submitting your application prior to the national application deadline of 31 October 2021.”

“Last year 94% of on-time applicants were allocated one of their preferred schools. It’s really important that you utilise all of the preferences to ensure that your child is allocated a school that you would be happy for them to attend. Applications received after this deadline will be processed as late applications and this will impact on your chance of receiving an offer at one of your preferred schools.”

Late applications are still accepted up until 31 December 2021, but reduce the chances of getting into the first school that is chosen on the list. To find out more and to fill in the application, visit the Walsall Schools Admission website.

One of the biggest hauls of cannabis in the Black Country was also found in Walsall in the summer, where a 40-room property on Slaney Road in Bescot housed over 6,000 plants worth a street value of £6 million.
